Day 11: Feeling Energy

When Wiccans talk about “energy,” we don’t mean it in the purely scientific sense of volts and calories (though, of course, those exist too). We’re talking about life force—the subtle current that flows through everything. You might call it chi, prana, mana, or simply vibe. It’s the pulse that animates a tree, the hum you feel standing in a thunderstorm, or the quiet stillness of a sleeping cat.

Wiccans learn to recognize and work with this energy through practice and awareness. Today, you’ll begin learning to feel it—gently, playfully, without pressure. Because once you can sense this flow, every magical act, prayer, or spell becomes more alive and intentional.

What Is Energy in Wicca?

Think of energy as the medium of magic. Just as a musician uses air to carry sound, or a painter uses pigment to express beauty, the witch uses energy to carry intent.

When you light a candle for healing, you’re not only using wax and flame—you’re shaping a current of willpower and compassion that travels outward. When you ground yourself or bless an object, you’re guiding this current consciously.

In Wicca, energy is neither good nor evil. It’s raw potential, shaped by purpose and emotion. It responds best to clarity and focus, not force.

Sensing Energy in Your Body

The easiest place to start is with your own body. You are, after all, a complex and sensitive energy system.

  1. Find a quiet spot. Sit comfortably, feet on the floor or legs crossed. Take a few deep, slow breaths.

  2. Rub your hands together briskly for about ten seconds. Feel the warmth building between your palms.

  3. Slowly separate your hands by a few inches and hold them facing each other. Keep your shoulders relaxed.

  4. Now move your hands slightly closer, then apart again.

Do you feel it? Some describe it as a gentle tingling, warmth, pressure, or even a magnetic push-pull. Others sense it as a faint pulse of air, or simply a knowing.

Don’t overthink it. Energy is subtle, and it doesn’t always appear on command. The point isn’t to “force” a sensation—it’s to notice what’s already there.

If you feel nothing, that’s fine too. Try again later when you’re calmer or more focused. Like learning to tune an instrument, it takes practice before you hear the notes clearly.

Expanding Your Awareness

Once you can feel energy between your hands, try expanding your awareness outward.

  • Feel the air around your body. Is it heavy, cool, buzzing, quiet?

  • Touch a living plant. Focus on the spot where your skin meets the leaf. Can you sense a subtle vitality?

  • Stand barefoot on grass, dirt, or stone. Imagine the energy of the Earth rising gently through your feet, filling you with steadiness.

  • Hold a crystal, stone, or piece of jewelry. Notice whether it feels different than ordinary objects—warmer, cooler, soothing, sharp, or dense.

Over time, you’ll learn to trust your own sensory language. Maybe “high” energy feels bright and crackly to you, while “calm” energy feels like deep water. Your interpretations are personal, and that’s part of the magic.

Working with Energy

After you learn to sense it, the next step is to move it.

Try this:

  1. Bring your awareness to your heart.

  2. As you inhale, imagine drawing in light—any color that feels powerful or comforting.

  3. As you exhale, send that light down your arms and into your palms.

  4. Visualize it gathering between your hands like a small, glowing sphere.

This is called a witch’s energy ball or power sphere. Play with it—expand it, compress it, toss it from hand to hand. Feel how it responds to your focus.

Then, when you’re done, let the energy flow back into the Earth, or breathe it back into your heart with gratitude. Always ground after energy work—otherwise you might feel lightheaded, scattered, or overstimulated.

The Emotional Side of Energy

Energy isn’t just physical—it’s emotional, too. When you’re joyful, your energy field expands; when you’re anxious or sad, it contracts or becomes uneven. That’s why Wiccans often say, “The magic follows the heart.”

Before you work any spell or ritual, take a moment to check in with your emotional state. Are you calm, focused, centered? If not, that’s okay—just acknowledge it. You can always ground or meditate first to bring yourself into alignment.

Wicca teaches that emotion is fuel for intention, not an obstacle. Anger can empower protection magic; sorrow can deepen healing work; love can infuse blessings with radiant warmth. The key is to remain aware—to be the director, not the passenger, of your emotional current.

Practical Daily Energy Tune-Up

To strengthen your sensitivity, try this short daily exercise:

  1. Morning: Before getting out of bed, take three deep breaths and imagine golden light filling your body from head to toe. Whisper, “I am connected, I am alive.”

  2. Midday: Pause for a few seconds. Notice where your energy feels heavy or tight. Breathe into that spot and release the tension.

  3. Evening: As you wind down, imagine brushing off the day’s energy—like wiping dust from your aura. You can even do this with your hands, sweeping downward and flicking away the residue.

These small rituals build your awareness without ceremony. Energy work doesn’t have to be dramatic—it’s about paying attention.

Common Misconceptions

Some newcomers worry that working with energy is dangerous or “too advanced.” But remember: you already do it every day. When you comfort a friend, focus on a task, or admire a sunset, you’re engaging with energy. Wicca simply makes that process conscious and sacred.

The only caution is balance. Don’t drain yourself trying to “send energy” constantly. Magic is cooperation, not domination—energy responds best to gentle partnership.

Journaling Prompt

“When have I felt energy or presence in my daily life—whether during meditation, music, or nature? How might I describe that sensation?”

Tomorrow, we’ll explore Day 12: Raising Power—how to gather energy intentionally for magical work, and how to safely release it back to the universe when your working is done.
